Dr Lucie Riou

Lecturer
French (ML)

I am teaching in both the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures and the Language Centre at intermediate and advanced levels. I graduated in Language Teaching Methodology and Linguistics in 2007, and I have been teaching in various European places and contexts. I also carried out a PhD programme at the University of Exeter in French linguistics. My research interests lie within the field of sociopragmatics of French, and more specifically politeness norms in France among friends.

Biography:

Originally from France, I graduated from Rennes 2 University. I gained a BA (2005) in English Language, Literature and Culture and French as a Foreign Language Teaching Methodology. Then I completed an MA (2007) in Language Teaching Methodology (French and English) and Linguistics (Research) at the same institution. Since, I have taught in various institutions and countries, as the Netherlands (Language Teacher training programme), Glasgow (primary and secondary schools, Alliance Française and Glasgow University) with students of different ages and needs. In 2013 I obtained a PhD in Sociopragmatics (Applied Linguistics). The focus of my work was politeness phenomena in French between friends. I was appointed Associate Lecturer in French at the University of Exeter in 2013 and then promoted to Lecturer. I now contribute to the development of French programmes, and teach French language and culture at intermediate and advanced levels.
