Languages, Cultures and Visual Studies

Russian

Whether you have an A-level in Russian, or are yet to begin learning it, you will find that our staff have lots of experience in supporting and guiding students through the challenges presented by the language, culture, and history of Russia. Beginners and post-A-level learners of Russian will study together on our modules about Russia’s culture and history. These modules are designed to help you reflect on the ways Russians have understood themselves and their country.

The knowledge you acquire will help you understand Russia today, when the state often draws on the past to create Russia’s image. For example, you can learn how Russia’s development as an empire shaped its identity, while also finding out how authors writing in Russian explored the world of human emotion in fiction and poetry.

In your third year you will have the opportunity to take courses in the Russian language, choosing from a range of locations outside Russia: Tallinn (Estonia), Riga (Latvia), Astana (Kazakhstan), or Tbilisi (Georgia). You will be able to develop your language skills, extend your knowledge of Russian culture, and discover the culture of your host country.
