Languages, Cultures and Visual Studies

French

French is spoken across several continents and so the possibilities that open up to speakers of French are immeasurable. Students can start French as a beginner or continue their studies post-A-level. French at the University of Exeter is a vibrant, diverse and friendly community within Modern Languages and Cultures. A dynamic teaching team supports students through their studies, during which you will work with both Francophone and Anglophone teachers.

Our modules cover an exceptionally wide range of areas in French and Francophone studies, offering choices looking at Middle Ages to the present day; contemporary women’s writing and publishing, film, linguistics, philosophy, cultural and literary studies, and Art History and Visual Culture. Our staff are experts in the subjects they teach, and passionate about sharing their love of French and Francophone cultures with our students.

Most of our students spend their third year on an International Placement (work or study); we have links with universities in French-speaking countries for those who wish to study (among them larger and smaller cities such as Paris, Montreal, Brussels, Grenoble and Rennes), while our work placement students take up a range of opportunities, for example in education, business, finance and retail. English Language Assistantships with the British Council are available in France, Belgium or Switzerland. For more information, please see our International Placement page.
